VfL Wolfsburg's season gets under way on Saturday with a DFB Cup first-round trip to fourth-tier SV Elversberg.
After working hard on the training pitch all summer, Wolfsburg begin their 2018/19 campaign on Saturday (kick-off: at 15:30 CEST) at Elversberg, who are currently bottom of the Regionalliga Südwest. Prior to the trip, VfL coach Bruno Labbadia took questions from the assembled journalists at a press conference. Here's what he had to say about ...
... the opposition: "We've done a lot of analysis of Elversberg in the last couple of days. We don't need to repeat how seriously we're taking this and we won't be distracted either by their current situation or by their league position. We want to reach the second round comfortably."
... the challenges of the DFB Cup: "We'll take the game very seriously and need to be completely focused. That's what makes this competition so tough, but also all the more exciting for the fans. We're not taking this game lightly. I've been to two DFB Cup finals as a coach, and I wouldn't mind a third. The only stop on our journey at the moment, though, is Elversberg."
... finding the right line-up: "There are a few question marks about the involvement of some players. Daniel Ginczek, Admir Mehmedi and Ignacio Camacho haven't trained fully this week, but that's not a real problem. In the first few weeks of the season we're going to look closely at who's best placed to help the team and then choose a line-up from there. I told the team that I was really pleased against Napoli that our substitutes – Mehmedi and Ginczek – were key in two of the goals. That's exactly what we need. We won't just have a preferred starting line-up straight away; we want to be flexible and need competition for places to keep progressing."
