“We haven’t achieved anything yet”

The coaches’ post-match comments following VfL Wolfsburg’s 3-1 win over Holstein Kiel in the relegation play-off first leg.

The Wolves take a two-goal advantage into Monday’s second leg after a comfortable victory over the third-placed Bundesliga 2 side at the Volkswagen Arena on Thursday. Bruno Labbadia’s side controlled the game for the most part, playing free-flowing, attacking football and making the most of their goalscoring opportunities. Kiel showed their offensive qualities in the latter stages of the contest, though, twice going close to a second away goal. Labbadia knows full well that his players will have to produce a similar display on Monday to secure their top-flight status for next season.

Bruno Labbadia: “It was a full-blooded display from both teams - just as I expected. We played very well for large parts of the game. It was a solid performance both with and without the ball, but we were a little sloppy in the final 20 minutes. It was an important win for us and it’s great that we managed to score a couple of goals, like we did against Köln. I’m expecting another tough encounter on Monday, though. We know what to expect and we’re aware that we haven’t achieved anything yet other than a first-leg victory.”

Markus Anfang: “It took us a while to find our feet, but that was to be expected against a quality team like Wolfsburg. Once we’d found our rhythm we scored a really nice goal and I thought we had a chance of getting something. VfL showed their individual quality after that, though. We played really well after their third goal and it was one-way traffic for the final 20 to 30 minutes. I think we deserved to get a draw. It’s a shame we weren’t able to do so.”
