Matches involving VfL Wolfsburg are rarely dull, and Saturday’s gripping battle with Mainz was no exception. After taking an early lead, the Green-Whites could have made the three points more secure but were thwarted in their attempts to do so by a home side who not only defended well, but also went all out for a goal of their own, particularly in the second half.
The game remained on a knife-edge right up to the final whistle but the Wolves’ valiant rearguard action saw them through, and earned them praise from head coach Oliver Glasner afterwards.
Oliver Glasner: “We’re very happy about this win against an incredibly strong Mainz side. I’m really proud of my players for the passion with which they defended from back to front. When you put so much effort in, throw yourself at every ball and try with all your might to keep the clean sheet, then you’ll be rewarded. That’s why we’re going home very happy with the three points.”
Sandro Schwarz: “We didn’t start well at all, fell behind after just eight minutes and had no control of the game after that. My players were in awe during that period. Nevertheless, we still had some chances to equalise before the break. At half-time we changed our tactics and we became more aggressive and energetic in our play. The fact that we had 10 corners and didn’t score a single goal, and Wolfsburg scored from one corner, sums it up for us today.”
