"We’d love to have got something from this game"
The post-match reactions from both head coaches following the Wolves' 1-0 defeat to Schalke.
Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco offered warm praise for the Wolves following VfL's disappointing 1-0 loss on Saturday, but ultimately Bruno Labbadia's charges once again had nothing to show for their efforts. Nevertheless, the Wolfsburg boss saw plenty to build on for the games ahead.
Bruno Labbadia: We knew that Schalke are a team that can grind out results. We had big plans for this game. We wanted to be solid at the back but also to defend from the front, close down the spaces and keep tight on their players. We did all of that very well. The only thing missing tonight was the result. We probably even deserved a win – but at the very least a draw. Even after falling behind we had a massive chance. We’d love to have got something from this game. I told the lads that they worked really well. It's a real shame, but we're still left empty-handed. At the very least, we can build on the things we saw here today.
Domenico Tedesco: Wolfsburg deserve credit for the way they approached the game today – their quality and mentality was excellent. They were very different from the side that played in Hoffenheim last week. It wasn’t an easy match for us. We set out to break up their possession and build-up play. We didn’t always manage that in the first half, but we did it better in the second. We had a lot of possession but weren't incisive enough in the final third. On a few occasions we didn't spot our players going deep. However, we had our chances – maybe even the better ones. I feel sorry for VfL, who didn’t deserve to lose today. Heads up and keep going.
