VfL head coach Oliver Glasner gives his verdict on the Wolves’ 2-1 Europa League win at home to Malmö.
The Green-and-Whites will go into their Round of 32 second leg against Malmö on Thursday 27 February (kick-off 18:55 CET) “with confidence” after beating the Swedish record champions 2-1 on home soil. Speaking after the game, VfL boss Glasner was full of praise for his players following a “fully deserved win” at the Volkswagen Arena.
Oliver Glasner: “We’re happy we were able to win the home leg. We were in control in the first half but weren’t precise enough in the final third. We always managed to create dangerous situations - particularly via the flanks - but nobody was able to get on the end of the final ball. We had a huge chance through Josip Brekalo, who struck the crossbar. Then we came out for the second half and made a mistake that was punished immediately. That made things difficult again.
“The players’ reaction was brilliant. They upped the ante again and scored a wonderful equaliser. We maintained the tempo and kept going forward, as we did recently at Hoffenheim after being pegged back. We believed in ourselves, and other than a half-chance for the opposition we were very, very well organised at the back. We nipped the majority of Malmö’s counter-attacks in the bud, which is why I think today’s win was fully deserved. We travel to Sweden next week with a half-time lead and know that Malmö are very strong at home, but we’re 2-1 up and go there with confidence. We know we’re capable of scoring goals away from home, too.”
