The coaches give their thoughts on VfL Wolfsburg’s 4-0 victory over 1. FSV Mainz on Sunday.
There were contrasting moods in the two camps following the Wolves’ win on Matchday 23: where VfL head coach Oliver Glasner was delighted with the Green-and-Whites’ display, his counterpart Achim Beierlorzer could not hide his disappointment.
Oliver Glasner: “The match got off to a strange start with six corners in a row. We got into the game better after that and then took the lead through Josip Brekalo’s brilliant strike. From then on we increasingly took control of the match and looked very good out wide with Renato Steffen and Brekalo. We were continuously able to find solutions during the game and we also scored our goals at exactly the right time: just before and just after half-time.
“You could see the team gained self-confidence and was enjoying playing. We kept attacking really well and it was rounded off by Steffen’s wonderful individual goal. I’m very happy with the way we got forward today and personally I’m delighted that we were finally able to keep another clean sheet. It was a good evening for us.”
Achim Beierlorzer: “Obviously, we’re disappointed because we came here aiming to get a better result. Their opening goal was decisive, and it changed the game. From then on Wolfsburg won increasing numbers of tackles, both in attack and in defence. We deserved to lose and need to give a better account of ourselves in our upcoming fixtures, particularly in terms of going into challenges. There’s no doubt that our next few matches will be decisive.”
