VfL won their final pre-season friendly, defeating third-division side 1. FC Magdeburg 4-1 a week before their first competitive outing of 2020/21.

It was an entertaining encounter, particularly in the opening period, with both Admir Mehmedi (8’, 64’) and Daniel Ginczek (12’ pen., 19’) scoring twice for Oliver Glasner’s side, who had to make do without the injured Wout Weghorst (back). John Yeboah missed another penalty in the 84th minute, while Christian Beck got the consolation goal for the home team.

The Wolves’ first competitive match of the season will be against fourth-tier outfit Union Fürstenwalde in the first round of the DFB Cup. It will be held at the AOK Stadion – after both clubs agreed to switch the venue to Wolfsburg – on Saturday 12 September (kick-off 15:30 CEST).

“Created a lot of chances”

Oliver Glasner: “It was a very good test against physically strong opposition. I liked the fact that we created a lot of chances and put together some lovely moves going forward. In the first half we lost our balance a bit for about 15 minutes and we were too gung-ho. We’d scored three goals in 19 minutes and then neglected things at the back to a certain extent. In the second half we were in total control and put together some nice moves every so often.”
