VfL’s 800th Bundesliga game

All the key stats ahead of the Wolves’ trip to Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Die Wölfe jubeln gemeinsam auf dem Spielfeld.

After winning 2-0 at Mainz in midweek, the Wolves begin the second half of the season with a trip to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Saturday 22 January (kick-off 15:30 CET). Victory at the BayArena would leave Oliver Glasner’s side level on points with Leverkusen, who beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 last time out. Saturday‘s encounter is also VfL’s 800th match in Germany’s top flight.

Further facts and figures

  • No team suffered fewer defeats in the first half of the season than the Green-and-Whites, whose only losses came at FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. The Wolves have never lost fewer matches during the first half of a campaign.

  • VfL and Leverkusen are among only four Bundesliga clubs this season to have scored more goals in the first half of games than the second. Despite their two second-half strikes against Mainz last time out, 16 of the Wolves‘ 26 goals have come before half-time, while Leverkusen have scored 17 of their 32 goals in the first 45 minutes.

  • Wout Weghorst’s goal in Mainz was his 12th in the league in 2020/21, setting a new VfL record for the first half of a campaign. Andrzej Juskowiak and Grafite were the previous joint record holders, with 11 goals in 17 matches in 1998/99 and 2008/09 respectively.

  • The Wolves have failed to win any of their last five Matchday 18 encounters. The last time they started the second half of a season with a win was in 2015, when they beat Bayern 4-1. There is hope, though: the Green-and-Whites are unbeaten in their last four visits to Leverkusen (W2 D2), who were once a bogey team
