VfL Ladies reach last 16

VfL Wolfsburg Ladies booked their place in the UEFA Women's Champions League last 16 with a 2-0 victory (3-0agg) over Icelandic champions Thor/KA in their round of 32 second leg on Wednesday.

Jubel der VfL-Frauen nach einem Tor.

Head coach Stephan Lerch's charges went into the match with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and their passage into the next round of the competition never looked in any doubt as goals from Pernille Harder and Ella Masar secured victory in a one-sided contest. The 2017/18 domestic double winners will discover who they face in the next round – with the ties to be played on 17/18 October and 31 October/1 November – when the draw is made in the Swiss city of Nyon on Monday. The Green-Whites are in action again before then, however, when hosting fellow Women's Bundesliga title hopefuls Bayern Munich at the AOK Stadion on Sunday 30 September (kick-off: 14:00 CEST).

„The team deserve credit“

Stephan Lerch: "We could've won by a much bigger margin again today, although we knew that Thor would sit deep once more. It's not easy to play against that, so my team deserve a lot of credit. They kept the tempo high and used the wings well. Obviously we'd have liked to have scored more goals but at the end of the day it's all about winning and reaching the next round. As we kept a clean sheet on top of all that means I'm very happy overall.“
