The victory at home to the Spanish champions on Wednesday evening leaves the She-Wolves with one foot in the quarter-finals of the continent's premier club competition. Pernille Harder hit a brace, while goals from Ewa Pajor and Caroline Hansen helped set the Green-Whites on course for the win in front of 1,523 fans at the AOK Stadion. The return leg will be played on Wednesday 31 October (kick-off 20:00 CET), but before then coach Stephan Lerch's charges face SC Freiburg at home in the Women's Bundesliga on Sunday 21 October (kick-off 13:00 CEST).
Stephan Lerch: "At the start you could tell we had a lot of respect for Atletico. We were too passive and often got too bogged down, even if we managed to create some chances to take the lead earlier than we did. At the break we set out to keep the tempo high and to be bolder going forward. It was good that we scored almost straight away in the second half, especially as we added a second shortly afterwards via a set-piece. That gave us greater confidence and we subsequently controlled the game until the final whistle, although Atletico did create a couple of chances. Overall it's a fair result and there's no question that we're very satisfied with the position we've put ourselves in."
