The VfL Wolfsburg Ladies continue to set the standard in the Women’s Bundesliga and laid down an early but important marker in their title defence on Matchday 3. An outstanding performance from the Green-Whites earned them a 6-0 win in their top-of-the-table clash at home to Bayern Munich on Sunday afternoon. An Ewa Pajor hat-trick, a Pernille Harder penalty, a goal from Alexandra Popp and an own goal from Bayern’s Verena Schweer made it six wins from six competitive games this season for the VfL Ladies, who are still yet to concede a goal. It was also Bayern’s first defeat of the season. The team do not have much time to enjoy the success, however, as many of the players are now heading off to their respective national teams. They will return to Bundesliga action on Sunday 14 October with an away fixture at SV Werder Bremen.
Stephan Lerch: “We were really on it today. We started the game well and we implemented our plan of putting Bayern under pressure from the off. We applied pressure early on, played our game from the back and created a lot of chances. In the second half it was a case of being alert from start to finish. My players deserve great credit for that. Their mentality was spot on and we gave away very little against a team with enormous individual quality. They worked their socks off until the end and the scoreline was justified given how many chances we created. I’m particularly pleased with the manner in which we played.”
