VfL face high-flying Frankfurt

VfL Wolfsburg Women get the matchday up and running at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Having cruised to a 3-0 win at SC Freiburg in the last 16 of the DFB Cup, VfL Wolfsburg Women kick off Matchday 7 of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga against third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt at the AOK Stadion. At Thursday’s pre-match press conference, head coach Tommy Stroot spoke about…

…personnel: “With Turid Knaak (knee) and Sofie Svava (who fell on her arm), we’ll have to wait until the final training session. Other than that, the personnel situation is unchanged.”

…opponents Frankfurt: “Frankfurt have great quality, particularly their attacking trio of [Lara] Prasnikar, [Shekiera] Martinez and [Laura] Freigang. They play a 4-4-2 diamond – unlike Freiburg last time out – but as we’ve seen in recent games they concede one or two goals too. That has to be our starting point. If we defend solidly, we’ve got a good chance of winning the game.”

…the congested top half of the table: “For us, it’s not important how the table looks right now. The pressure on Champions League participants is incomparable to previous years, when [the result] was often clear after the first leg. Now every game is important. You now have to play to your limits every three or four days. That’s an advantage for teams like Leverkusen and Frankfurt, who are lurking just behind.”
