VfL Wolfsburg finished off Matchday 19 with a 3-0 win over SC Freiburg at home in the Volkswagen Arena on Sunday evening, sending them up to third in the league. John Anthony Brooks (21’) and Wout Weghorst (39’) were on the scoresheet in the first half, with Yannick Gerhardt putting the icing on the cake shortly before full time (86’).

Brooks slots home from a corner

Despite Sunday’s icy temperatures, the visitors looked ready for battle from the off. The first chance of the game fell to the home team, however, who were unchanged from the Bayer Leverkusen match, but SC goalkeeper Florian Müller made a comfortable save from Paulo Otavio (4’). A Wolves corner from the left was flicked on by Maxence Lacroix to Brooks, with the central defender slotting home with his left to make it 1-0 (21’). There was a VAR review but the goal – VfL’s 700th at home in the top flight – was confirmed.

Weghorst yet again

Freiburg were rocked but soon came back with a vengeance, and it took a combination of Otavio and Brooks to block Ermedin Demirovic’s goal-bound effort (33’). The Green-and-Whites then took matters into their own hands – and how! A wonderful flowing move culminated in Renato Steffen finding Weghorst with a slide-rule pass on the left of the area. The Dutchman held off Keven Schlotterbeck then displayed every ounce of his technique to make it 2-0 in the 39th minute, doubling his side’s lead as they went into the break.

Post denies the Dutchman

As expected, SC began the second half all guns blazing with Baptiste Santamaria’s header grazing the bar immediately after the re-start (46’). Two minutes later, the busy Frenchman was at it again on the left, this time just failing to find the target. Weghorst then dampened the visitors’ enthusiasm in the 53rd minute with a cross-shot that thudded against the right-hand post.

Despite Freiburg’s unstinting efforts, the result was finally put beyond any doubt by Gerhardt in the 86th minute. Substitute Bartosz Bialek failed to pick up a throw-in from Ridle Baku, but Gerhardt was on hand to stab the ball home.
