VfL Wolfsburg Women continue to set the pace in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga. Last season’s double-winners brushed aside 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 5-1 in their first home match of 2020 to maintain their spot at the top of the league ahead of Hoffenheim and Munich, who are level on points.
The 1,820 fans at the AOK Stadion saw a brace from Ewa Pajor as well as goals from Pernille Harder, Alexandra Popp and Zsanett Jakabfi, while Lara Prasnikar replied for the visitors, who had Johanna Elsig sent off for a second bookable offence just before the break. As will be the case around the Bundesliga this weekend, there was a minute’s silence for the victims of the attacks in Hanau, with both teams wearing black armbands.
“That was a great reaction!”
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “After the win away to Hoffenheim, we’ve recorded another comfortable victory over a top-five team and scored some nice goals while we were at it. Once again we managed to get on the scoresheet early, which is very important for our style of play. What was great who how we produced an immediate reaction to the goal that we conceded, which was an absolute gift.
“That was a great reaction that we showed. Johanna Elsig being sent off had a decisive effect on both sides in terms of how the match panned out. Potsdam did well and closed us down, but towards the end of the match, the substitutes gave us some added momentum and contributed to the two further goals that we scored. That proves once again what a strong bench we have.”
