VfL Wolfsburg’s women registered their second win of the season on Matchday 2 of the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga, triumphing 6-1 at Duisburg. Alexandra Popp and Ewa Pajor both struck braces, while Dominique Janssen and Claudia Neto were also on target for the reigning double-winners, with Lisa-Marie Makas netting for the hosts.
The result means the She-Wolves are now in second place in the table as one of three teams with maximum points from the first two rounds of matches. There’s now a break from league action as the international players head off for the first set of European Championship qualifiers next weekend, before the six-time cup winners begin their DFB Cup defence at regional league outfit SV Berghofen on Saturday 7 September (kick-off 14:00 CEST).
“First goal opened the door”
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “The first goal from Alex Popp opened the door in a way. In the second half, we wanted to carry on from where we’d left off in the first – and we did that. We were far more clinical in our finishing than last week and made sure of the result, so I have to give our team a lot of credit. It’s great to have started the season with two wins.”
