The Bundesliga is currently on an international break, with the first set of Euro qualifiers involving VfL players finishing on Thursday with two happy endings. Josip Brekalo came on after an hour of Croatia’s 3-0 (3-0) win over Hungary, while Pavao Pervan was on the bench for Austria’s 3-1 (1-1) success against Israel.

30 minutes for Brekalo

The seventh round of matches saw Croatia take another vital step towards qualifying for UEFA Euro 2020 from Group E. Dalic Zlatko’s men eased to a 3-0 win at home to Hungary, stretching their lead at the top of the table. A red card for former Werder Bremen player Laszlo Kleinheisler (56’) ended any hopes of a Hungarian second-half comeback, shortly after which Brekalo came on for Bayern Munich and former Wolfsburg man Ivan Perisic. Brekalo will have another chance to represent his country this Sunday when Croatia travel to current fourth-placed team Wales (kick-off 20:45 CEST).

Pervan still waiting for debut

Wolfsburg goalkeeper Pervan is also hopeful of making it to the European Championship finals next year. In Group G, Austria came from behind to defeat Israel 3-1 (1-1). Pervan was not used, with Cican Stankovic of RB Salzburg playing the full 90 minutes between the sticks. Austria will also be in action again on Sunday (kick-off 20:45 CEST) away to Slovenia. The win against Israel took them up to second place on 13 points, three behind leaders Poland (16) and with every chance of qualification.
