Two relegations in Nations League

A summary of the weekend’s international matches involving VfL Wolfsburg players.

As the Bundesliga took a break over the weekend, several Wolves were in action for their national teams – sadly without much success. Josip Brekalo and his Croatia side suffered a 2-1 defeat in England, which saw them relegated to League B in the UEFA Nations League. Yunus Malli and Turkey also suffered relegation from League B to C after losing 1-0 to Sweden, despite having the better chances in the game. Meanwhile, VfL goalkeeper Koen Casteels watched on from the bench as Belgium went down to a stunning 5-2 defeat in Switzerland having been 2-0 in front. The Belgians weren’t relegated but the result meant they failed to qualify for the finals of the tournament.

Elsewhere, Marcel Tisserand and Democratic Republic of Congo maintained their hopes of qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-1 draw with Congo-Brazzaville. All four teams in Group G can still go through ahead of the final round of fixtures. Tisserand’s defensive colleague Felix Uduokhai played the full 90 minutes in Germany Under-21s’ 3-0 win over the Netherlands, but John Yeboah and Charles-Jesaja Herrmann lost out to their Dutch counterparts with the Under-19 side.
