VfL Wolfsburg arrived at their training camp in the Portuguese town of Almancil on Saturday. The Green-and-Whites will spend a week there preparing for the second half of the season in optimal conditions, but they did not have much time to bask in the mild temperatures and blue sky. Straight after their arrival, head coach Oliver Glasner invited his players onto the training pitch near the team hotel for the first time.

“Focus on footballing points”

“The conditions here are amazing and the training pitch is in excellent condition,” commented the VfL boss, who called on his squad to “make the most of the setting”. The Wolves have no time to waste as they kick off the second half of the season with a trip to 1. FC Köln on 18 January. “I don’t even like to use the word ‘preparation’ because it’s only two weeks until the league starts again. We’ll focus on footballing points as the players are already in very good shape physically. We want to pick up from where we recently left off but also work on our efficiency,” added Glasner, setting out the direction for the coming days in Almancil.

Wout Weghorst was not involved in the first training session of the year, though, as the striker was feeling unwell and sat out the first day as a precaution.
