Tough test against Ajax

VfL Wolfsburg take on Ajax in a friendly in Amsterdam on Friday 3 August.

VfL Wolfsburg take on Ajax in a friendly in Amsterdam on Friday 3 August.

The Wolves’ clash with the Dutch giants and last season’s Eredivisie runners-up kicks off at 18:00 CEST and will take place behind closed doors.

Top opponent with great tradition

Bruno Labbadia’s charges will go toe-to-toe with one of Europe’s top sides when they take on the 33-time Dutch champions, who can count the likes of Johann Cruyff, Marco van Basten and Dennis Bergkamp - their current assistant coach - among their former stars. Head coach Erik ten Hag has been at the helm since the end of last year, while 18-year-old wonderkid Matthijs de Ligt is the current club captain despite his young age.

In Moroccan playmaker Hakim Ziyech, left-back Daley Blind, highly rated homegrown talent Donny van de Beek and former Schalke 04 frontman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Ajax possess genuine quality throughout their side. Their squad is also in peak condition, having already played their first competitive games of the new season. On Wednesday, ten Haag’s team won 3-1 at Sturm Graz following a 2-0 first-leg victory to clinch their place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. New signing Dusan Tadic and Huntelaar (2) got the goals in Austria.

Penultimate friendly ahead of season start

Kevin De Bruyne was on target in the Green-Whites’ 1-1 draw in Amsterdam three years ago - the only previous meeting between the two clubs to date. Friday’s meeting is the Wolves’ penultimate friendly ahead of their first competitive fixture of the season - the DFB Cup first-round clash with Elversberg on 18 August. In their final game of pre-season on 11 August, Labbadia’s side take on SSC Napoli as part of VfL’s fan and family day.
