To London with confidence

In the Champions League semi-final first-leg, the Lady-Wolves will be looking to lay the groundwork for progression to the final.

Women's head coach: Stephan Lerch.

Following their success in the DFB-Cup semi-final, the women from VfL now prepare for their next last-four clash. On Sunday, April 22nd (kick-off 19:05 CEST), in the UEFA Women᾽s Champions League semi-first-leg, the Lady-Wolves take on Chelsea Ladies, who were eliminated by the Green-Whites last season (Round of 32) and two years ago (Round of 16). Prior to the clash in London, which will be broadcast live by Pay-TV channel Sport1+ and on sport1.de. VfL coach Stephan Lerch discussed…

…the opponents: Chelsea have developed further and brought in players that do the team good. They’ve earned some good results in the league and are playing for top-spot. That considered, I am expecting a different game to what we experienced against them in recent years. It will be another clash at eye-level. It could prove a slight advantage that Chelsea had a game during the week. We will be looking to maintain a high tempo and put Chelsea under pressure, in order to achieve the required result.

…the role as favourites: We are in a phase in which it plays a less significant role as to who is considered favourite, because it’s the little things that can prove decisive. We know what we are capable of and we are self-confident. When we perform, we are difficult to beat.

…the personnel situation: Jana Burmeister has successfully undergone surgery – concerns about a possible meniscus tear were not confirmed. She will be out of action for about four weeks. Otherwise, with the exceptions of the long-term injured Babett Peter and Vanessa Bernauer, all players are on board.

…personal requirements: We are not feeling any pressure. It’s clear that we have set goals for ourselves and are still in the running for three titles. Progression to the DFB-Cup final was a real motivation booster, as we now know we will definitely play in one final this season. It’s a great incentive to be so well represented in all three competitions.
