After two victories to get their FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga season under way, at home to SC Sand (1-0) and away at MSV Duisburg (6-1), the She-Wolves have also enjoyed a winning start to their DFB Cup campaign.
Head coach Stephan Lerch’s charges made their bow in the second row and saw off SV Berghofen 2-0, a Regionalliga team from the Ruhr who put up a real fight and tried to snuff out any and every attack that the five-time Cup-winners put together.
The Waldstadion Aplerbeck was sold out, and the 2,000 fans saw Pia-Sophie Wolter give VfL a 15th-minute lead, but it was not until the dying moments that Swiss international Lara Dickenmann put the tie beyond doubt, following up a rebound to make it 2-0 (89’). The win puts the She-Wolves into the last 16 of the DFB Cup.
Stephan Lerch: "We struggled a bit more than we expected. That was partly due to the fact that we didn’t manage to impose our style of play as we would have wanted to, and also because Berghofen defended very solidly. Our passing game wasn’t very tidy either and we didn’t manage to get a second or a third goal after we’d gone 1-0 up, which would have settled us down. The hosts threw everything into the battle and got a foot in where they had to, so hats off to them."
