“There are always nerves”

New VfL head coach Mark van Bommel is looking forward to his first competitive game against Preußen Münster in the DFB Cup.

The start of the new season is upon us and the tension is rising. Following an intensive pre-season featuring six friendlies, the campaign gets under way in earnest for the Green-and-Whites on Sunday 8 August, when they face Regionalliga (fourth division) side Preußen Münster in the first round of the DFB Cup – one of three competitions in which VfL are hoping to give a good account of themselves in 2021/22. At Friday’s press conference, Van Bommel answered the media’s questions on…

…the excitement ahead of his first competitive game: “There are always nerves when you start something – whether it’s the first training session or first competitive game. It’s nice to be getting under way. We’ve been training for several weeks, now we can really get to work.”

…who will play in goal on Sunday: “Sunday is our first competitive game and Koen [Casteels] will be playing, but we might rotate our goalkeepers in future cup games.”

…underestimating lower-league opposition like Preußen Münster: “That’s not the case at all. We’re not taking things lightly at any rate, and we’ve prepared well. We’ve seen a few of Preußen Münster’s games. That’s why I’m not worried.”

…personnel: “Joao Victor isn’t involved yet – he’s still recovering. Other than that, Paulo Otavio and Aster Vranckx are obviously missing and Felix Nmecha is still working his way back to fitness. All the others were on the pitch today and are fit.”

…a possible advantage for last season’s first-team regulars: “Last year the lads played very well, but there are no guarantees. Normally the captain always plays, although that can change in exceptional cases. Everything starts from scratch again.”
