A furiously paced final match of the Bundesliga season resulted in a record 8-1 victory for VfL Wolfsburg, whose mammoth win over Augsburg secured automatic qualification to next season’s UEFA Europa League group stage.
It was the perfect send-off for outgoing coach Bruno Labbadia, who was “extremely proud” not only of the team’s performance but also their development over the course of the season as a whole. His Augsburg counterpart Martin Schmidt admitted his team “weren’t on the same level”.
Bruno Labbadia: “It was a great day today. We put all our passion from the season into this performance today. Their willingness to keep pressing and create chances, to never give up: it was the stuff dreams are made of to finish the season like this.
I’m extremely proud of how the team has developed. I’m really looking forward to seeing them perform on television – or even live – next season. I’m also glad to see the club back in Europe again after two years in the doldrums. It’s a great finish to an intense season. People say these commercial clubs don’t have any emotion but I’ve seen more emotion here in the last few weeks than ever before. I’ll take that with me and I’m really pleased to have spent time here.”
Martin Schmidt: “Obviously we were struggling personnel-wise and there were three or four players on the pitch who haven’t played Bundesliga football in a long time. Still, that’s no excuse for what happened today. It’s a massive disappointment for me and the whole team – the whole club, even. It was a historically big defeat and that can’t be happening on the last day of the season. We didn’t see the real FC Augsburg out there. I can guarantee you we’ll be quite different next season.”
