Shortly after 10.30 this morning, the VfL players and the new coaching staff led by Mark van Bommel took to the training pitch in front of the Volkswagen Arena. Not even the pouring rain could dampen the excitement about the challenges ahead as the Wolves were put through their paces for more than 100 minutes. “That was a very normal training session,” said Van Bommel after his first session as head coach. “The guys have already learned a bit about the way we want to play. I think they enjoyed it too.”
A total of 20 outfield players and three goalkeepers took part in training. Van Bommel had to do without the six players involved in EURO 2020, of whom only Swiss duo Admir Mehmedi and Kevin Mbabu are still left in the tournament. John Brooks, who is still on holiday after winning the CONCACAF Nations League with USA, was also missing, as was Josuha Guilavogui, who had to sit out following a positive COVID-19 test.
New shirt numbers
There have been a couple of alterations to the shirt numbers, with Renato Steffen now wearing 11 instead of 8, which has been taken over by new signing Aster Vranckx. The returning loan players have kept their old numbers, meaning William is again No.2, Omar Marmoush No.29 and Elvis Rexhbecaj No.37.
