Having got off to successful starts in the DFB Cup and UEFA Women's Champions League, the VfL Ladies now get down to the core business of the league campaign. On Sunday 16 September (kick-off 14:00 CEST), the Wolfsburg Ladies begin their Bundesliga title defence at home to 1. FFC Frankfurt. Ahead of the game, coach Stephan Lerch spoke about...
... the opposition: “FFC have had to cope with a period of change but the quality in the squad remains enormously high. They have a lot of Bundesliga experience in the squad and a lot of players who can dictate the tempo. They’ve made some good signings again this summer, so they’re certainly a team who will demand everything of us.”
… the personnel situation: “We had a few concerns after the cup game at Hannover but the situation has settled down since then. Other than Anna Blässe and Jana Burmeister, everyone’s available for Sunday as things stand.”
… his expectations of the match: “I’m sure we’ll see a very close game. Frankfurt will be tight at the back and will try to switch play quickly when they get the ball, but we want to control the game ourselves and not focus on the opponents. What we need is good counter-pressing. We also need to take the few opportunities we’ll get. One thing we’ve taken from our first two games is that we need to improve our chance conversion.”
