Attacking midfielder pens new deal to keep him at VfL until 2023.
VfL Wolfsburg and Renato Steffen were keen to extend the latter’s contract, and on Friday a new deal was signed that will keep the Swiss international at the club through to 30 June 2023. “I’m really happy that we could get this contract extension done before the start of the new season, as now I can concentrate 100 per cent on the sporting side of things,” said the winger, who has been wearing the Green-and-White for the past two-and-a-half years. “There’s plenty that I want to achieve with VfL and I want to play my part in helping us reach our goals. I also very much enjoy living in Wolfsburg and my family has settled in here very well. We’re all really looking forward to what the next few years have to offer.”
“Renato does the team a world of good”
Steffen, 28, has scored 11 goals in 74 Bundesliga matches since joining the Wolves from Basel in January 2018. In all competitions, the right winger has made 90 appearances for the club and really made a name for himself in the second half of last season. “Renato’s performances have continually improved for us and he’s also shown that he can play a number of positions, adapting well to each different role every time,” said sporting director Marcel Schäfer. “This kind of versatility is what sets him apart, as well as his intensive and attacking style of play that really does the team a world of good. We’re delighted that we are going to be able to count on Renato into the future.”
Eleven caps for Switzerland
Steffen made his Switzerland debut in October 2015 and has gone on to play 11 times for his country to date.
