VfL Women are looking to the future and have already completed their first signing for next season, recruiting 20-year-old Netherlands international Joelle Smits who will join the club from PSV Eindhoven on 1 July 2021. Smits has signed a contract through to 30 June 2024 with the six-time German champions.
Smits has represented the Netherlands at various youth levels, and was handed her senior international debut at the ‘Tournoi de France’ this year. She cut her teeth at the CTO Eindhoven youth academy, but her greatest achievement at club level to date came in 2018/19, when she helped FC Twente win the Dutch league title. The ’s-Hertogenbosch-born forward then joined PSV the following season.
“Happy that my dream is coming true”
“VfL Wolfsburg are one of the leading clubs in women’s football and I’ve been dreaming of playing for this club one day for a number of years now,” said Smits. “I’m all the more delighted that this dream is coming true next year.”
“I’m very happy that Joelle Smits – one of the most promising attacking talents in a country that is currently European champions and World Cup runners-up – will be wearing our shirt from next season onwards,” added VfL Women sporting director Ralf Kellermann. “Though we’d have liked to have signed her this summer, we’re pleased that we were able to secure her services in advance. My thanks go to those responsible at PSV Eindhoven for the constructive talks that preceded the early agreement for Joelle’s transfer.”
