The year 2020 ended in the same way as it started in February for VfL Wolfsburg Women: with victory away from home. In their final game before the winter break – which also marked the start of the second half of the season in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga – the defending German champions triumphed 2-0 at SGS Essen.
The goals at Stadion Essen came from Pia-Sophie Wolter and Zsanett Jakabfi as the She-Wolves rounded off a turbulent year in second place. Leaders FC Bayern Munich did not let up in the title race either, thrashing SC Sand 6-0 to maintain their five-point advantage over the Green-and-Whites.
Stephan Lerch’s side return from the break with a home match against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam on Friday 5 February (kick-off 19:15 CET). The first training session of the new year takes place on 10 January.
"Proud of the team"
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: "The team worked hard and they were compact as a unit without the ball, so there were slim pickings for Essen. I'm very proud of the team's performance and the fact that, after two weeks playing midweek, they didn't take their foot off the pedal here at Essen. It's been a hard year, especially the last few weeks, which the team are also feeling now. That makes it even nicer that we were able to celebrate a convincing, hard-earned win here. Now we can go home feeling good."
