She-Wolves face leaders Bayern

VfL Women will move top of the table with victory over FC Bayern Munich.

VfL Wolfsburg Women can take a major step towards defending their league title with victory at home to Bayern Munich on Sunday 9 May (kick-off 13:00 CEST). The She-Wolves, who are two points behind the Bundesliga leaders with three rounds of fixtures left to play, can leapfrog the Bavarians at the top of the table if they claim all three points this weekend. At Thursday’s pre-match press conference, head coach Stephan Lerch spoke about…

…personnel: “Katarzyna Kiedrzynek is training on her own after injuring her finger, she isn’t with the team yet. There’s a big question mark regarding her availability. If she doesn’t play I won’t be overly concerned – Almuth Schult did very well in Duisburg, after all. Other than that, all players are available.”

…expectations ahead of the game: “It’s going to be intense and emotional, and probably frantic too. There are also going to be plenty of challenges. There’s just a great deal riding on the game, so everyone will be looking to avoid mistakes. We obviously don’t expect Bayern to perform like they did in the DFB Cup semi-finals.”

…their game plan: “We head into the match with optimism, positivity and excitement. Other than that we won’t do a lot differently compared to recent weeks. The important thing is that we believe in our strengths and don’t let other things influence us.”

…the shift in momentum: “We obviously expect Bayern to go into the game with a certain degree of determination. They’re under more pressure than us. We know how to deal with situations like that – I don’t know if Bayern can do the same. Bayern were completely dominant until the DFB Cup semi-finals but now we’re playing for two trophies, while they’re only playing for one.”
