If Oliver Glasner’s side manage to keep closest challengers TSG Hoffenheim at arm’s length on Saturday, they will have rounded off an outstanding season by finishing sixth in the Bundesliga for only the third time in their history - after 1999 and 2019. The Green-and-Whites have come seventh on just one occasion, in 2000 to be precise.
More facts and figures on the game against the record champions:
Never before have VfL finished a league season in the summer, although they did once play their final game of a campaign in June. Matchday 46 of the 1992/93 Bundesliga 2 season saw Siggi Reich, Holger Ballwanz and Co avoid relegation from the second tier with a 2-1 victory at Fortuna Düsseldorf.
VfL last beat Bayern in the league on Matchday 18 of the 2014/15 season, when the Wolves went on to win the DFB Cup. Kevin de Bruyne and Bas Dost both scored twice in a 4-1 victory for VfL, who ended the campaign as runners-up.
The Green-and-Whites have beaten Bayern four times in the Bundesliga, including three on home soil - 3-2 in 2003, 1-0 in 2006 and an unforgettable 5-1 triumph in 2009. They also won 5-4 on penalties in the 2015 Supercup.
Champions Bayern have won their last 15 games in all competitions.
If the Wolves hold on to sixth place, they will have qualified for the Europa League group stage for the fourth time in their history (after 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2019/20).
The presentation of the championship shield has taken place at the Volkswagen Arena only once before - on 23 May 2009, when VfL were crowned German champions.
