Resuming under the floodlights

VfL Women play 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam at home in their first match of 2021.

After around four weeks of preparation and three friendlies, VfL Wolfsburg will be playing for points in the FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga for the first time in the new year. On Friday 5 February (kick-off 19:15 CET), the second-placed She-Wolves host fourth-placed 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam at the AOK Stadion. At the press conference ahead of the match, head coach Stephan Lerch spoke about…

…the confirmed absentees: “Dominique Janssen has back trouble. Ewa Pajor is training with the group but will also be unavailable. She’s doing really well and could be back in contention after the international break. Sadly, Pauline Bremer is still a long way off, as was already clear.”

…his summary of the preparations: “We’re well prepared for the start. The team have worked well. We had three good friendly games, although we certainly still need some time to get back into our rhythm.”

…the ambitious opponents: “I think it could be beneficial to us that we’re starting against Potsdam and then a week later against Hoffenheim. That’s a really tough set of opening fixtures and certainly different to coming up against teams who are further back – both in the table and in terms of how they line up on the pitch. Potsdam are a team who want to be actively involved in the game, so we’ll be fully switched on.”

…who will start in goal: “We’re going to line up with Katarzyna Kiedrzynek, and Rike Abt will be on the bench. The pecking order that has now been established won’t be changed again at short notice, but of course I can’t say what it will be in five or six weeks’ time.”
