The VfL Wolfsburg women head into another busy week on the back of three points after beating SGS Essen on Matchday 2 of the Women’s Bundesliga. After struggling to finish off their chances in the first half, Stephan Lerch’s side ran out clear 5-0 winners in the second period thanks to a hat-trick from Ewa Pajor (60', 74', 75') and goals from Pernille Harder (48') and Nilla Fischer (70'). The result lifts VfL above Essen into second place in the table. The double winners are next in action on Wednesday 26 September when they host Thor/KA at the AOK Stadion in the second leg of their UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 clash.
“Kept the pressure high”
Stephan Lerch: “We had a lot of respect for this task and the first half validated that – the game was very balanced. We had some very good chances but Essen also had a few sights of goal. After the break we wanted to make better use of our chances and also gain more control of the game, and we did that. We kept the pressure high and we were always able to turn defence into attack. There were still a few dangerous moments in front of our goal. Overall, though, I’m very pleased with how we played out from the back and created the goals.”
