The She-Wolves have one foot in the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition thanks to a thumping victory over Dutch champions Twente in front of 1,543 fans at the AOK Stadion.
The Green-and-Whites were without several players due to injury, but braces from Zsanett Jakabfi and Dominique Janssen, as well as strikes by Pernille Harder and Fridolina Rolfo, earned a precious win for Stephan Lerch’s side.
The return leg will take place in Enschede on Wednesday 30 October (kick-off 19:00 CET), but VfL have two FLYERALARM Women’s Bundesliga matches to negotiate before then. On Sunday 20 October they travel to 1. FFC Frankfurt (kick-off 14:00 CEST), before hosting SGS Essen on Saturday 26 October in Wolfsburg (kick-off 13:00 CEST).
“We kept the tempo high”
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “The match took a while to get going and we needed time to find our feet in the game. We only had some half-chances during that period, but the longer the match wore on the more dominant we became, and we found better solutions. We kept our composure, let the ball do the work and waited until the opportunities presented themselves. In the second half we kept the tempo high and I’m delighted that we won by such a clear margin. Now we’re looking forward to the return leg, which we’ll approach in a professional manner. Today’s result might give us the chance to give one or two players a breather in Enschede, which is important given how small our squad is due to injuries. But we’ll make a decision on that when the time comes.”
