No longer a bogey team

All you need to know ahead of VfL’s trip to Augsburg.

VfL Wolfsburg followed up their 3-0 Bundesliga triumph over SC Freiburg with a 1-0 DFB Cup success against Schalke, giving them the chance to crown a perfect week with another victory in their Matchday 20 encounter away to FC Augsburg on Saturday 6 February (kick-off 15:30 CET).

Formerly a bogey team for VfL, Augsburg are currently winless in their last six meetings with the Wolves (three defeats, three draws).

Further facts and figures

  • Poor run over?: Augsburg have lost four of their five most recent Bundesliga assignments. That said, they did win the other game 2-1 against Union Berlin in their last outing at home.

  • Top three: The 3-0 triumph over Freiburg lifted VfL to third in the table, the team’s biggest margin of victory this term propelling them to their highest position in 2020/21. The Wolves were last in the top three in the second half of a season six years ago (2014/15), a campaign in which the Green-and-Whites won the DFB Cup and finished as league runners-up under Dieter Hecking.

  • Wins with clean sheets: Oliver Glasner’s men have equalled a club record by winning their last three Bundesliga games without conceding a goal.

  • Defensive foundation: A solid defence has been the key to the team’s success under Glasner. RB Leipzig are the only club in the Bundesliga to have kept more clean sheets than VfL’s seven (nine), while Julian Nagelsmann’s charges are also the only side to have conceded fewer than the Wolves’ 19-goal total (17).

  • Weghorst’s club record: Wout Weghorst scored his 13th league goal of the campaign against Freiburg, a new VfL record after 19 rounds of fixtures. However, the Dutchman still has a long way to go to break the Wolves’ all-time single-season benchmark of 28 goals set by Grafite in the title-winning 2008/09 campaign.
