While VfL Wolfsburg made use of the break in Bundesliga action to draw 1-1 with second-division side Hamburger SV in a friendly on Thursday, several of the Wolves’ international players were competing for their respective countries. Lukas Nmecha helped Germany Under-21s to a 2-0 friendly victory over Greece, while Kevin Mbabu’s Switzerland earned themselves a point against the Republic of Ireland in UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying.

New VfL signing fires U21s ahead

Wolves summer signing Nmecha started for Germany’s U21s in Zwickau and put them ahead after 25 minutes, but the 20-year-old was taken off at the break as coach Stefan Kuntz fielded a completely different side for the second half. Niklas Dorsch of 1. FC Heidenheim completed the scoring after the restart (58’) to earn the hosts a 2-0 win.

Mbabu starts

Elsewhere, Switzerland had to settle for a 1-1 draw in their EURO 2020 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland. Mbabu started for the visitors before being withdrawn in second-half stoppage time, with Admir Mehmedi appearing off the bench a few minutes earlier. Renato Steffen, however, did not make an appearance.
