Nine internationals

Wolves players will be involved in World Cup qualifying, friendlies and the U21 EURO.

Immediately after the 2-1 win at Werder Bremen, the Wolves went their separate ways for the time being. While the majority of the squad get to enjoy four days without training, nine VfL players have headed off to their national teams. For Josip Brekalo (Croatia), Admir Mehmedi and Kevin Mbabu (both Switzerland), Koen Casteels (Belgium), Pavao Pervan and Xaver Schlager (both Austria), it’s the start of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. John Anthony Brooks will be in friendly action for the USA, as will Bartosz Bialek with Poland’s U21s in Spain. And for Ridle Baku and Germany’s U21s, the group stage of the European Under-21 Championship in Hungary gets under way, with the German team facing the hosts in their opener.

However, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic continues to cause travel restrictions around the world. As a result, following consultations with their associations, Casteels and Brooks will not be involved in all of their countries’ matches. Brooks will only take part in the Americans’ first friendly against Jamaica in Vienna and sit out the following game against Northern Ireland in Belfast, while Casteels will not make the trip for Belgium’s second qualifier against Czech Republic in Prague, instead staying in Belgium for the third match against Belarus in Leuven. The reason for this decision is the high infection rate – the number of new infections – at the time of the call-ups in both Czech Republic and Northern Ireland.
