New man for the attack

Admir Mehmedi makes the move from Bayer Leverkusen to the Wolves.

New addition: Admir Mehmedi.

Shortly before the January transfer window closes, VfL Wolfsburg have reacted to the current squad situation and secured a new addition for their attack. 58-time Swiss international Admir Mehmedi makes an immediate move to the Green-Whites from Bundesliga opponents Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The 26-year-old offensive player, who has scored 23 goals in a total of 122 Bundesliga games for Bayer 04 and SC Freiburg, successfully passed his medical on Wednesday morning and will participate in the 11:00 CET team training session (closed to the public). Following the session, Mehmedi, who has signed on with VfL until June 30th, 2022 and will wear the number 22 jersey, will be officially presented at a press conference.

"Proven his quality over years"

"Admir Mehmedi fits the bill of our player requirements perfectly. He can be implemented in a variety of attacking roles, he knows the Bundesliga and he can immediately help us. He is a real win for the team, as he has proven his quality over many years, both nationally as well as internationally," stated VfL Sporting director Olaf Rebbe. VfL head-coach Martin Schmidt is looking forward to the cooperation with the new man: "Admir brings masses of experience, but at the same time, he is far from being at the end of his potential to develop further. With him in the team, we have more offensive possibilities, are more complete as a team and tougher to reckon with."

"VfL is a highly renowned club"

Mehmedi, who was born in Macedonia and has Albanian roots, made the move from Dynamo Kiev to SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga in 2013. Prior to that, the attacker spent several years at FC Zürich (2006 to 2011), with whom he became a Swiss championship winner in 2009. "VfL Wolfsburg is a very highly renowned club and boasts a very, very positive reputation in my homeland, due to the club’s Swiss connections in the past. I am delighted that the transfer has materialised and I hope to be able to play my part in helping VfL enjoy a successful second half to the season," said Mehmedi. During the winter-transfer period, the Green-Whites have added to the squad with Josip Brekalo, prematurely ending a loan spell at VfB Stuttgart, and Renato Steffen from FC Basel.
