A number of Wolves were on duty with their international teams over the weekend. Switzerland were one of the countries playing qualifiers for next year’s UEFA European Championship, and they included Admir Mehmedi in their line-up as they picked up three vital points against Gibraltar. Elsewhere, Josip Brekalo also enjoyed a win with his Croatian team-mates.
Assist for Brekalo
The "Vatreni" were on sparkling form in Slovakia, running out 4-0 (1-0) winners. Nikola Vlasic (45’), Ivan Perisic (46’), Bruno Petkovic (72’) and Dejan Lovren (89’) were on the scoresheet for the Croats, for whom Brekalo came on in the 70th minute and set up the third goal. The win means that Croatia currently sit atop qualifying Group E.
Mehmedi finds back of net
Switzerland were never in any danger against Gibraltar, as the 4-0 (3-0) scoreline would suggest. Denis Zakaria gave the Swiss the lead after 37 minutes, and VfL forward Mehmedi doubled the advantage shortly afterwards (43’). In time added on at the end of the first half, former Wolf Ricardo Rodriguez made it 3-0 (45’+3). Mehmedi played the full match and Renato Steffen came on after 65 minutes, while Kevin Mbabu was an unused substitute. Switzerland now sit third in Group D.
Three Wolves unused
VfL goalkeeper Pavao Pervan was not called upon in Austria’s 6-0 (2-0) Euro qualifier win over Latvia, as was the case for Yunus Malli, whose Turkey side notched a late winner to defeat Andorra 1-0 (0-0). As for John Brooks, he did not feature in the USA’s 3-0 friendly defeat versus Mexico.
