The facts on the Wolves’ league opener against VfL Bochum.
There are exactly 15 clubs ahead of Wolfsburg in the all-time Bundesliga table. One of them is VfL Bochum in 13th place, who have played a good 300 games more than the Wolves. But when the promoted team visit the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday 14 August (kick-off 15:30 CEST), it will be the first meeting between the two in a long time. On 6 March 2010, Bochum led 1-0 at half-time but ended up losing 4-1 to the then defending champions, whose team included the likes of Marcel Schäfer and Edin Dzeko.
Further facts and stats on the opening match of the season:
The Green-and-Whites are lagging slightly behind in the overall head-to-head record. In 27 competitive meetings – covering four different competitions – VfL have lost 13 and won just 10.
The only encounter in the DFB Cup was a goal-filled affair. In the round of 16 of the 1999/2000 campaign, Bochum won 5-4 in normal time thanks to a strike in the last minute.
The Wolves have begun the season with a home match against the Ruhr club once before. Under Jürgen Röber, the 2003/04 campaign got off to a successful start thanks to Martin Petrov’s winner in a 3-2 victory.
As well as head coach Thomas Reis and Elvis Rexhbecaj, Bochum’s sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz also has Wolves connections. He was part of the 2009 Bundesliga-winning side and was still in the squad for the aforementioned last meeting between the two teams.
