The Green-and-Whites only need one more win to reach the group stage proper of the competition – but first need to overcome AEK Athens on Thursday 1 October (kick-off 20:45 CEST) in their play-off tie. Ahead of the encounter at the Olympic Stadium in the Greek capital, VfL head coach Oliver Glasner addressed the following topics in his pre-match press conference…

…the game and the opposition: “We’ve come to Athens to take the last step towards the Europa League group stage. We know it’ll be a tough game. They’re very well organised at the back and have only conceded once this season. Up front they’ve got very creative players who are good in one-on-ones and are always capable of getting a goal. But we’re ready to win the game and will do everything we can to make sure that happens.”

…personnel: “Obviously we’d like to have our whole squad available, but we have one or two players missing through injury. Koen Casteels has stayed at home after picking up an injury against Freiburg, so he’ll be absent alongside Joao Victor. Everyone else who flew out here, including Wout Weghorst, is fit and available to play. In the end I’ll pick the players who I feel will give us the best chance of winning the game.”

…the significance of the match: “At the end of the day it’s like a final because there’s a place in the Europa League group stage at stake.”
