Lerch heeding first-leg lessons

VfL Wolfsburg Ladies are looking to improve their finishing in today's UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 second leg against Thor/KA.

After Sunday's 5-0 win at SGS Essen, the She-Wolves welcome Icelandic side Thor/KA to the AOK Stadion (kick-off: 18:00 CEST) hoping to build on a 1-0 first-leg lead and seal their place in the round of 16.

Room for improvement

The Icelandic champions' disciplined defending was a major factor in the modest margin of victory in Akureyri, although a lack of sharpness when opportunities did come along also proved frustrating.

"We had so many chances," said head coach Stephan Lerch. "We hit the post and the bar, but the scoreline didn't reflect that. We need to improve, but I'm certain we've learned from the first leg. Even though we know the opposition won't make it easy for us, we want to take our chances as well as we did in Essen. We're in good form and want to qualify without any scares."

Alex Popp absent

Midfielder Anna Blässe is once again available, but Lerch will be without Alexandra Popp. "She has a skin problem in the pelvic region and won't play as a precaution," said Lerch, who did not rule out further changes to the line-up. "If that's the case, it won't be anything to do with playing Bayern on Sunday. We have too much respect for the opposition to do that. At the moment we have a lot of players impressing in training and making it really hard for me not to select them."
