With maximum points from their first two league games, VfL Wolfsburg head into their third match as the Bundesliga’s early-season leaders. The Wolves round off Matchday 3 on Sunday 29 August (kick-off 17:30 CEST) when they face RB Leipzig at the Volkswagen Arena. In Friday’s pre-match press conference, head coach Mark van Bommel was asked what he makes of Sunday’s opponents and whether being in first place will give his side an added boost.
Here’s what the 44-year-old Dutchman had to say on…
…opponents Leipzig: “RB Leipzig have always been near the top of the Bundesliga in recent years. They’ve also reached the latter stages of the Champions League. It won’t be an easy game on Sunday, but I don’t think they like visiting us either. Leipzig have strengths and weaknesses – just like us. I think we know what they’re about. I’m trying to prepare my team as well as possible so we know how to behave when we’re in possession and when Leipzig have the ball.”
…being top of the league: “We need to stay grounded, whether that’s in the face of criticism after losing friendly matches or after the two wins in the league. We’ve won two games but not everything is perfect. There are things we still need to improve. We have to be completely focused going into every game. Not a single Bundesliga game is easy to win, which makes me all the more pleased that we have six points on the board.”
…team news: “Apart from the three long-term absentees Bartosz Bialek, William and Paulo Otavio, everyone is fit. Luca Waldschmidt isn’t fully recovered yet but is able to train again. We’ll decide tomorrow whether to include him in the squad. He can play in several positions, which is one of our strengths. We have several players who can play in different positions. That’s always a good thing for any team.”
