The Bundesliga women from VfL Wolfsburg have landed a major victory in their core business in the German championship. On match-day 10, in the top-of-the-table clash, coach Stephan Lerch’s eleven secured a 3-1 (3-1) win over last season’s runner-up FC Bayern, in front of a crowd of 1,700 in the AOK Stadion on Monday evening.
In a turbulent opening phase, Ewa Pajor (2') and Sara Gunnarsdottir (5') put the Green-Whites well on their way to victory. Former VfL player Jovana Damjanovic, who saw red late on, reduced the deficit with a speedy response from the visitors (8'), but after Alexandra Popp made it 3-1 (32'), the Munich club could find no way back – even against ten Lady-Wolves (second-booking Wullaert, 63'). In the table, the Green-Whites not only reclaimed top-spot from SC Freiburg, who were successful on Sunday, put also put a renowned competitor at a safe distance. As to whether the two-point advantage will be enough to see the Lady-Wolves go into the winter break as league leaders, will be decided this coming Sunday, December 17th, when they finish the first half of the campaign away to 1. FC Köln.
