The She-Wolves remain unbeaten this season after signing off for the winter break with a 0-0 draw at home to SGS Essen on Sunday afternoon. The visitors from the Ruhr region deserved the point after a keenly contested match, even though the VfL Ladies had the better chances and pushed for a winning goal in the closing stages. The Green-Whites' lead over FC Bayern Munich at the top of the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga table has now been cut to three points after their second draw of the 2018/19 campaign. The two sides meet in Bavaria in a top-of-the-table clash when the Bundesliga resumes on Sunday 17 February 2019.
“Won’t get down in the dumps”
VfL head coach Stephan Lerch: “It was a great game against an Essen side who played very well from the first minute to the last. Many of our players didn’t perform to their usual standards – that’s human. In the end we weren’t able to land the killer blow, but maybe that would’ve been too much of a good thing. We won’t be down in the dumps over Christmas now because we didn’t win this match. However, these games remind us that things don’t happen by themselves and that we have to work for it. We’ll definitely take that with us into the rest of the season.”
