Kick-off in Japan

Six She-Wolves involved in Olympic women’s football tournament.

Six VfL Wolfsburg players are in action as the Olympic women’s football tournament gets under way in Japan. Dominique Janssen, Jill Roord, Shanice van de Sanden, Lynn Wilms plus late call-up Joelle Smits are all representing the Netherlands, while Rebecka Blomqvist is playing for Sweden.

Starting against world champions

Sweden versus USA is a classic fixture in women’s football, and now the two titans clash right at the start. As well as Blomqvist, former She-Wolves Madelen Janogy, Hedvig Lindahl and Fridolina Rolfö are in the Swedish squad.

Brazil in second match

The African confederation was only handed one place for the Olympic tournament, and it was surprisingly Zambia who claimed it. European champions and World Cup runners-up Netherlands are therefore outright favourites for their opening group game. The Dutch face their biggest challenge in their second fixture against Brazil, while third opponents China certainly fall into the ‘awkward’ category.
