The VfL Ladies are ready for their first UWCL game of the season.
Following Saturday's comprehensive DFB Cup win at Hannover 96, the VfL Wolfsburg Ladies will be looking to get their continental campaign off to a similarly successful start in the first leg of their UEFA Women's Champions League Round of 32 fixture on Wednesday (kick-off 18:30 CEST). Stephan Lerch's side take on Thor/KA in the Icelandic city of Akureyri, hoping to put themselves in a good position ahead of the return leg at the AOK Stadion in two weeks. However, last season's runners-up have already encountered some difficulties on the journey of almost 2,600 kilometres: due to a technical fault with the plane, the squad had to make an unplanned stop in Denmark, causing a delay of around two hours. Jana Burmeister and Anna Blässe are still unavailable due to injury, and Babett Peter is in light training, but this one comes too early for her. Everyone else is available."
… the opposition: "We're up against the Icelandic champions who have come through qualifying to get to the Round of 32. They're a compact, solid team who we expect to be up for a battle. The have a lot of quality in attack and players who are good on the ball, so we need to prepare for that and stop them getting forward. We need to keep up the tempo – that will be very important. I want us to be clinical and take our chances."
