VfL Wolfsburg were held to a 1-1 draw by Bundesliga 2 side Holstein Kiel in a friendly on Thursday afternoon. Second-half substitute Mamoudou Karamoko cancelled out Salim Khelifi’s first-half penalty in the 73rd minute to preserve the Green-and-Whites’ unbeaten start to the season in competitive and non-competitive matches.
“We learned a lot”
VfL head coach Oliver Glasner: “It was an important test. We played in a 4-2-3-1 formation for the first time today and learned a lot. It’s also very nice to see Paulo Otavio back after three months out, and the same goes for Jay Brooks. Neither seemed to have any problems with their respective injuries. I’m now keeping my fingers crossed they don’t suffer a reaction.
“A lot of players were given 90 minutes today, as was planned. You could tell that one or two were lacking a bit of match sharpness, though. The ‘Under-23 goal’ was obviously great with Luca Horn flying down the touchline and finding Karamoko, who showed today that he can be a real presence in the penalty area. I’m pleased the lads are taking the opportunity to prove themselves and learn something in the process.”
