A wreath was laid at the grave of former VfL star Krzysztof Nowak on the 15th anniversary of his passing.
Tuesday 26 May marked the 15th anniversary of the death of former VfL Wolfsburg player Krzysztof Nowak. Despite the current situation and trying times, delegates of VfL, the club’s fan scene, Nowak’s widow Beata and other family members and foundation representatives gathered at his grave in the morning in order to continue the important tradition of laying a wreath in honour of the “Number 10 in our hearts”, all the while complying with social distancing guidelines.
Dr. Tim Schumacher represents VfL board
At Nowak’s final resting place at the Waldfriedhof cemetery in Wolfsburg, Dr. Tim Schumacher represented the VfL executive board in accompanying Beata at the ceremony. They were joined by the board of trustees of the Krzysztof Nowak Foundation, Wolfgang Hotze, Roy Präger and Reiner Müller, in commemorating Nowak, who passed away in 2005 at the age of 29 after suffering from the nervous system disease ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
The Wolves’ fan scene was represented by fan liaison officers Holger Ballwanz and Michael Schrader as well as members of the VfL Supporters’ Association Wolfsburg.
Gone but never forgotten
“Today’s tribute at Krzysztof’s grave serves as a symbol that our VfL family stands together and supports each other, especially in difficult times,” said Schumacher. “And as part of this VfL family, Krzysztof will always be in our hearts.” The VfL Managing Director also gave special thanks to the fan representatives in attendance, with their annual presence at the ceremony on this important date underlining how highly regarded the former Green-and-Whites player remains after his tragic passing. This can also be heard at every Wolves home game, when “The Number 10 in our hearts, Krzysztof Nowak!” rings out over the loudspeaker at the Volkswagen Arena after the official line-ups are announced.
Krzysztof Nowak Foundation supports those in need
The Krzysztof Nowak Foundation was set up in May 2002 by VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH, the club’s players, and Deutsche Bank. Its objective is to support and nurture people who are struggling as a result of the incurable disease ALS. A three-person advisory board in Wolfsburg oversees the foundation’s activities and the use of donations received. By making a donation to the Krzysztof Nowak Foundation, everyone can support the fight against ALS.
