VfL Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schäfer was present at a meeting of the Wolves' official fan clubs.
Representatives of VfL's official fan clubs met for the first time in 2019 on Wednesday evening. Ahead of the first home match of the year against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Saturday 26 January (kick-off: 15:30CET), fan representatives Holger Ballwanz, Carsten Ihle and Michael Schrader as usual led the programme in front of around 120 attendees at the Volkswagen Arena clubhouse. Sporting director Marcel Schäfer joined them, thanking the fans for their support over the last year as well as taking questions.
After being welcomed by warm applause on a chilly night, Schäfer began with a quick summary of his work since taking on the role of sporting director last summer. The 34-year-old discussed his impressions and insights as well as praising the club's progress so far this season, with 28 points collected by the winter break. "We had a great first half of the season which we can be really pleased with," Schäfer said.
Schäfer, who remains a popular figure and has always had a sympathetic ear for the VfL supporters, showed the fan-club members he has not changed one bit in his new role when the evening ended with a Q&A session. One fan started a question by addressing him formally as "Mr Schäfer", only for the former left-back to interrupt and ask the supporter to call him "Marcel" otherwise he would not want to answer the question, prompting loud applause and laughter among the audience.
