“Important to keep clean sheet”

VfL Wolfsburg travel to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Tuesday evening.

There’s a midweek programme to round off the first half of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season. Matchday 17 pits the Wolves against Mainz 05 on Tuesday 19 January (kick-off 20:30 CET), and ahead of the trip south, head coach Oliver Glasner spoke to the press about…

…opponents Mainz 05: “Mainz had a change of coach about 10 days ago and have changed their system a bit. In the last match against Dortmund, the team also had a different formation which was geared towards counter-attacking. They try to get the ball forward very quickly. As well as that they have physically strong centre-backs, a hard-running midfield and a lot of pace in attack – that makes them awkward opposition. We need a good performance to win at Mainz.”

…VfL’s playing style against more defensive opponents: “Our approach is always the same, really – namely that we want to win. The idea to put the opposition under pressure early and get forward quickly is the same regardless of who we’re playing.”

…team news: “Maximilian Arnold is back after his suspension, but the squad isn’t finalised yet. We had coronavirus tests again today, we’re now waiting for the results and then we’ll meet tomorrow morning before heading to Mainz. We have to react quickly, which is why it’s not yet definite who will be there. I’m very glad that a lot of players are in good form and I’ve got options to choose from.”

…the fact that VfL are winless in 2021: “We’ve spoken about that briefly with the players. We’ve produced good performances but also conceded two goals in every game – and one from a set piece in every game as well. It’s vital that we cut out these little lapses of concentration at set pieces and continue to improve there. We’ve been looking very good a lot of the time, we’re capable of scoring goals in every game. Now it’s important to keep a clean sheet at the back so that we take home the three points.”
